About Blantyre

Blantyre is Malawi's commercial capital and largest city, named after the Scottish birthplace of explorer David Livingstone. Nestled among hills and mountains in the southern Shire Highlands, the city has a more established, urban feel than Lilongwe, with colonial-era architecture, vibrant markets, good restaurants, and a lively arts scene.

The city centre features the historic Church of St Michael and All Angels (built in 1891, one of the oldest buildings in Central Africa), the lively Limbe Market, and the excellent Museum of Malawi. The surrounding highlands offer scenic drives, tea estates, and easy access to Mount Mulanje and Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Blantyre is the economic heart of Malawi and the base for most business in the country. It has better infrastructure, shopping, and dining options than other cities, making it a comfortable base for exploring the south. The nearby industrial suburb of Limbe, connected by a continuous urban corridor, adds additional markets and character.

Best Time to Visit
Year-round. The highland location (1,040m) keeps temperatures pleasant. May to October is dry and cool. November to April is the rainy season with warm days and afternoon thunderstorms. June to August mornings can be chilly.

Practical Tips

Know before you go

Best Dining
Blantyre has the widest restaurant selection in the country. Try 21 Grill for upmarket dining, Bombay Palace for Indian food, or local spots for nsima and relish. The restaurants at Huntingdon House and Ryalls are also excellent.
Southern Malawi Hub
Blantyre is the best base for exploring southern Malawi. Mount Mulanje is 1.5 hours east, Majete Wildlife Reserve 1.5 hours south, Zomba Plateau 3 hours north, and the southern lakeshore 3 hours northeast. Stock up on supplies here.
City Safety
Blantyre is generally safe during the day but avoid walking alone at night, especially in poorly lit areas. Use registered taxis after dark. Keep valuables secure in crowded markets. The city centre can be very busy.
