About Lilongwe

Lilongwe is Malawi's capital city and the main gateway for international visitors arriving by air. The city is divided into two distinct areas: the Old Town, a bustling African market town with busy streets, colourful markets, and small shops; and the New Town (Capital Hill area), the modern administrative centre with embassies, shopping centres, and international restaurants.

While most visitors pass through Lilongwe quickly on their way to the lake or national parks, the city has several worthwhile attractions. The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a respected sanctuary for orphaned and rescued animals. The Old Town Market is one of the largest and most vibrant in the country. The city's green spaces, including the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary along the Lingadzi River, offer surprising pockets of wilderness within the urban area.

Lilongwe is also an excellent base for day trips to nearby attractions including Dedza Pottery, Ntchisi Forest Reserve, and the Kuti Wildlife Reserve.

Best Time to Visit
Year-round. May to October is cooler and drier. November to April is the rainy season with occasional heavy afternoon thunderstorms. The city is at moderate altitude (1,050m) so temperatures are pleasant year-round compared to the lakeshore.

Getting There

Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) receives international flights from Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam. Lilongwe is also connected by bus to all major towns in Malawi.

Practical Tips

Know before you go

Withdraw Cash Here
Lilongwe has the most reliable ATMs in Malawi. Withdraw enough Malawian Kwacha for your onward travel, especially if heading to remote areas like Likoma Island, Nyika, or Cape Maclear where ATMs are scarce or non-existent.
Buy a Local SIM
Pick up an Airtel or TNM SIM card at the airport or in town for affordable data and calls. Mobile money (Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba) is useful for payments throughout Malawi. Bring your passport for SIM registration.
Safety in the City
Lilongwe is generally safe but take normal precautions in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in poorly lit areas. Keep valuables secure in markets and bus stations. Use registered taxis.
Airport Transfers
Agree a taxi fare before leaving the airport — expect MWK 25,000-40,000 to the city centre. Some hotels offer airport transfers if arranged in advance. Ride-sharing apps are not widely available.
