About Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park is located in southern Malawi, bordered by the Shire River, and characterized by lush floodplains and dense woodlands. Covering 548 square kilometres, the park stretches along the Shire River just south of Lake Malombe and Lake Malawi, near the Mozambique border. Established in 1973, it's widely considered Malawi's finest game park and one of Africa's great conservation comeback stories — since African Parks took over management in 2015, the park has seen remarkable wildlife recovery, with cheetah, lion, black rhino, and wild dog reintroduced between 2016 and 2022.

The park is now a Big 5 destination, home to black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo, along with cheetah, African wild dog, hyena, sable and roan antelope, hippo, crocodile, and over 460 recorded bird species. Birdwatching highlights include Pel's fishing owl, Böhm's bee-eater, Livingstone's flycatcher, and Lillian's lovebird.

Best Time to Visit
July to October (dry season) is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals concentrate around the Shire River and vegetation thins out. September and October offer the most dramatic sightings but are very hot. The wet season (November to April) brings lush green landscapes and excellent birding, but some roads become impassable.

Practical Tips

Know before you go

Park Fees
Liwonde National Park entry fees are approximately USD 10 per person per day for international visitors. If staying at Mvuu Lodge or Camp, fees are usually included in the rate. Otherwise pay at the main gate.
Reintroduced Predators
African Parks has successfully reintroduced lions, cheetahs, and black rhinos to Liwonde. While sightings are not guaranteed, they are increasingly common. The presence of large predators means walking safaris are conducted with armed rangers at all times.
Malaria Prevention
Liwonde is in a high-malaria zone. Take prophylactic medication, use DEET-based repellent especially at dusk and dawn, wear long sleeves and trousers in the evening, and sleep under a treated mosquito net. Lodges provide nets but bring your own repellent.
What to Pack
Bring neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown) for game drives and walks — avoid bright colours and white. A good pair of binoculars is essential. Bring sun protection, a hat, and a light jacket for early morning boat trips when it can be cool on the river.
