About Majete Wildlife Reserve
Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of Africa's greatest conservation success stories. Once heavily poached and nearly devoid of wildlife, the reserve was taken over by African Parks in 2003 and has been transformed into a thriving Big Five destination — the only one in Malawi. Lions, elephants, black rhinos, leopards, and buffalo all roam the rugged miombo woodland and riverine habitats.
Located in southern Malawi where the Shire River flows through dramatic rocky gorges, Majete covers 700 square kilometres of wild, hilly terrain. The landscape is a mix of miombo woodland, mopane savanna, and lush riverine forest along the Shire and Mkulumadzi rivers. The reserve's success in reintroducing species — including over 2,500 animals of 14 species — has made it a model for conservation across Africa.
Majete offers excellent game drives, walking safaris, and boat trips along the Shire River. The exclusive Mkulumadzi Lodge provides a luxury safari experience, while the community campsite offers a more affordable option. The reserve's location makes it easily combinable with visits to Blantyre and Mount Mulanje.
