About Mangochi & Southern Lakeshore

The southern lakeshore around Mangochi is one of Lake Malawi's most popular resort areas, stretching from the lake's outlet at the Shire River northwards along a string of golden beaches. This is where many of Malawi's top beach resorts are concentrated, offering everything from luxury lakeside lodges to simple beach camps.

Mangochi town sits at the southern tip of the lake where it narrows into the Shire River. The town has a rich history — the Queen Victoria Memorial Tower (clock tower) was erected in 1901, and the nearby Fort Mangochi was built in 1897 at the site of a former slave trader's stockade. The nearby beaches of Palm Beach, Nkopola, and Club Makokola are among the most developed on the lake.

The area offers excellent water sports, fishing, and relaxation. The warm, calm waters are perfect for swimming, sailing, and kayaking. Nearby attractions include the Lake Malawi Museum in Mangochi, the old Portuguese fort at the lake outlet, and boat trips to the palm-fringed islands dotting the southern lake.

Best Time to Visit
Year-round beach destination. May to October is the dry season with pleasant temperatures. September to November is hottest. December to April is the rainy season — warm but with afternoon thunderstorms. The lake is warmest from October to April, ideal for swimming.

Practical Tips

Know before you go

Book Ahead in Peak Season
The southern lakeshore is popular with Malawian holidaymakers during school holidays and the Christmas/New Year period. Book well in advance during December-January and Easter. Midweek stays are quieter and sometimes discounted.
Sun Protection
The lakeshore sun is intense, especially reflected off the water. Use high-SPF sunscreen, reapply frequently after swimming, and wear a hat. Seek shade during the hottest part of the day (11am-2pm). Heatstroke is a real risk.
Water Sports Safety
Life jackets should be worn for all boat trips and water sports. Check that boats have basic safety equipment before departing. Avoid swimming at night or far from shore. Currents near the Shire River outlet can be strong.
