About Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay is a vibrant lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Malawi, known for its beautiful natural harbour, laid-back atmosphere, and some of the best diving and snorkelling on the lake. The town cascades down forested hillsides to a series of rocky coves and sandy beaches, with crystal-clear water teeming with colourful cichlid fish.

Long a favourite stop on the backpacker trail, Nkhata Bay has a lively social scene with beachfront bars, live music, and a friendly mix of travellers and locals. But it offers much more than nightlife — the surrounding area includes pristine beaches, waterfalls, traditional fishing villages, and excellent opportunities for diving, kayaking, and sailing.

Nkhata Bay is also the main port for the MV Ilala ferry, which connects lakeside towns and islands including Likoma Island. The town serves as a natural base for exploring the northern lakeshore and its many hidden coves and beaches.

Best Time to Visit
Year-round, though May to November offers the driest weather and clearest water for diving and snorkelling. The lake is warmest from October to April. July to September can be windy. The Christmas and New Year period is busy with both local and international visitors.

Getting There

Nkhata Bay is approximately 5 hours from Lilongwe by road via Mzuzu. Regular minibuses and coaches run from Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and other major towns. The road from Mzuzu (about 50 km) descends steeply through dramatic scenery to the lakeshore. The MV Ilala ferry also calls at Nkhata Bay on its weekly schedule.

Practical Tips

Know before you go

Negotiate Boat Prices
Always agree on a price before boarding local boats for trips to beaches or snorkelling spots. Prices should be negotiated — ask at your lodge for current fair rates to avoid overpaying.
Bilharzia Risk
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) is present in Lake Malawi. Risk is lower in rocky areas and deeper water. Consider taking Praziquantel prophylactically or 6-8 weeks after lake exposure. Ask your doctor before travel.
Beach Safety
Swim during the day and stay in groups. Avoid leaving valuables unattended on the beach. The lake is generally safe for swimming but be cautious of boat traffic in the main harbour area.
Getting Around
The town is steep and spread out. Most lodges are a 10-20 minute walk from the town centre, some involving steep paths. Bicycle taxis and motorbike taxis are available for getting around.
