About Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve
Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve is Malawi's oldest and largest protected area, covering 1,800 square kilometres of dense miombo woodland and riverine forest in central Malawi. Under the management of African Parks since 2015, the reserve has undergone a dramatic transformation, including one of the largest elephant translocations in history, more than 520 elephants moved from Liwonde and Majete to repopulate Nkhotakota.
The reserve is wild and remote, with the Bua River flowing through dense forests that feel truly untamed. Unlike the open grasslands of Nyika or the riverine plains of Liwonde, Nkhotakota is thick bush, more challenging for game viewing but rewarding for those who appreciate genuine wilderness. The landscape is dramatic, with forested hills, river valleys, and hidden waterfalls.
This is a destination for visitors seeking solitude and authentic bush experiences rather than Big Five tick lists. Walking safaris, fishing on the Bua River, and forest birdwatching are the main draws. The exclusive Tongole Wilderness Lodge offers one of Malawi's most remote and beautiful safari experiences.
